Non-Fiction TV: I Reject Your Reality and Substitute My Own

This thread is for non-fiction TV, including but not limited to reality television (So You Think You Can Dance, Top Chef: Masters, Project Runway), documentaries (The History Channel, The Discovery Channel), and sundry (Expedition Africa, Mythbusters), et al. [NAFDA]

I'm just reading TWOP's recap of the TAR finale, and Miss Alli points out something I totally missed:

we switch over to Nick and Don's cab, where Nick is saying he thinks they have a good cab driver. And their driver says, "You got numbah-one taxi-drivah." Dude. He watches the race, he knows it's the race, and he's making a joke about the race. Because he -- not Nick or Don, but Anonymous Cab Driver -- got that from Ian's weirdly obsessive repetitions of "numbah-one taxi drivah" back in Vietnam, which I totally didn't notice in the bar at all, but which is obvious on playback. That is a really weirdly meta moment. Can you imagine being that cab driver and being like, "Holy shit! I'm picking up Amazing Race contestants! Quick, what's a taxi-driver joke? ...Wait, that one's kind of racist and makes no sense here anyway. Eh, what the hell. I'm on television!"

But they aren't going to show the finale live. They filmed the non-finale episodes at least 2 months ago - and will no doubt get down to 3 or 4 by that time.

(Top Chef starts March 12 - leaving me to believe that PR runs through February at least.)

Friends don't let friends read "Atlas Shrugged"

I have, somehow, become addicted to America's Test Kitchen. They're so focused on the minutae of specific dishes. Cooking geeks!

Thank God for Comcast OnDemand--I too have been sucked into America's Test Kitchen, due to its availability for me to watch when I want. They're sooo helpful with their suggestions and show everything. Love the equipment comparisons as well as the food tastings, too.

I love America's Test Kitchen. I fear that I missed the all important Cookie Jar episode.

Hey, I've been seeing ads for a BBCA reality show called "Last Restaurant Standing" - between that and Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares - I am amazed at the number of people who dream of running a restaurant.

Punishingly Intricate

For some reason I can't stop watching the Biggest Loser this season. It's so annoying! I don't get how anybody but a really big guy would ever have a hope of winning it.

But I did love the biggest guy, Trent, doing yoga last night. His form was really beautiful.

Tyra has a new show:

"It is a competition show about aspiring assistants looking to become assistant editors at a fashion magazine," Mok said. "At the same time they're trying to prove themselves as aspiring fashionistas, that they have a sense of style and savvyness, all the things to make it in the fashion world."

In each episode, the contestants will compete in two challenges, an individual competition and a team competition, in which each squad will submit a page for "The Book," a mock edition of the magazine. The losing team's page will end up in the trash, and one of its team members will be eliminated. The page from the other team will be included in "The Book." The winner of the competition will land a job in the fashion industry.

See? I gave everybody here an opportunity to tell me what a bad person I am and nobody did, because I fuckin' rule.

Random PR note: According to a commenter on Project Rungay, the Levi's challenge outfits are all on display at Levi Strauss Plaza here in SF. The commenter reported that (a) they're all unbelievably tiny, and (b) they all look incredibly well constructed. I may have to go on a lunchtime field trip sometime this week.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

(b) they all look incredibly well constructed.

Er, even Jillian's? Which was held together with glue?
