OK, say one is employed in the computer/tech industry and been working for the same company for more than 10 years (11, actually). What's the usual/common amount of vacation/PTO/sick time that one might get per year?

I don't know if it's normal but I've been with my company for 7 years now and I get 4 weeks vacation time (I think my original small company was pretty generous w/ the vacation time and people got to keep what we'd accrued when we were purchased by a much larger company a few years ago). We used to have unlimited sick time but I think it's 10 days a year now.

In negotiating an offer from the company I'm going to work for I emphasized how important keeping all that vacation time was for me and they offered me the same 4 weeks there. They only have 40 hours sick/personal time though.

Now we'll have to see if I'll actually be able to take the time off when I want it!

Three at my Michigan job, four or five at my last job, and more than that here. All the jobs were tech jobs, but only the first one was at a tech company.

Is that just sick time? I can't believe that's all the time off you got.

I usually get two weeks vacation, one week sick time. I haven't been anywhere more than 3 years in a row, though, and that was an improvement over being a contract worker for years and getting no PTO other than a handful of holidays.

The large tech company that pays me has a schedule of accruing 10 days/year until year 4, 15/yr until year 14, and 20 days after that.

Is that just sick time? I can't believe that's all the time off you got.

Whoops. That was vacation/PTO. I've never had sick time rolled in, so my eyes glanced right over it. One week/year in Michigan, two at my first CA job, and not sure about here.

Oh, that was vacation time. Sick leave is 10/year, it rolls over and has no upper limit.

I've been here 12.5 years, and I get 20 vacation days, 5 personal days and 8 sick days a year. A certain amount of the vacation and all of the sick time can be carried over, but the personal days are use or lose during the year.

I started at 10 days vacation, but I maxed out on how much I can get a good while ago, unless I ascend.

I am an admin assistant, but all people in my university, including tech people, get the same vacation benefits

After being here 6 years, I get 18 vacation days and 1 week PTO/sick time. I am hourly. At the same time worked, were I salaried, I would get 20 vacation days and unlimited sick time.

I get 20 days combined vacation/sick leave, though this year we get an extra bonus week in place of the shorter Friday summer hours we got last year. Which suits me much better, as I still have to spend 3 hours driving and $20 gas for days that end at 2pm.

I get 18 days combined sick/personal/vacation. At my last place I had two weeks vacation and unknown sick time - nobody ever called me on it, anyway.

For a person in reasonable health with no dependents, having it all lumped together like that is a pretty good deal. I'm actually probably less likely to take "I just don't feel like it" sick days because I don't want to spent vacation on it - but if I decide to, I don't have to fake sick. If you have kids, I suspect it's a different calculation.
