Oh, no, tiggy, not at all - I should perhaps have contextualised my "I cried" comment. I can be reduced to tears by my school's weekly assembly and by adverts, never mind storytelling. And even whilst I knew that RTD was doing that classic Stephen King make-them-like-the-character-then-kill-them thing, I still liked the fat couple, and was very sad when Mr Fat Bloke died. He was so endearing about the whole phone bill thing. And, you know, I can't overstate the whole business of my people being in genre telly. Because I am a geek, and 99.9% of all Scifi TV/Cinema is full of Americans, so people who sound normal are just such a delightful aberration that they get a lot of extra brownie points from the get-go.
It's not great telly, by any manner of means. It's cracktastic, and very flawed - but also, you know, Doctor Who is what we all grew up with. And - my people!

I'd argue that it occasionally rises to the level of great television, as in the case of "Blink" and some of the 9th Doctor episodes.

tiggy, I definitely had mixed emotions about it. There were too many times when I could see the strings that RTD was using to tug on the hearts of viewers, which is a huge no-no for me. That was what made me walk out in the middle of Fellowship of the Ring. But there were moments when the rollicking good adventure of it carried me through.
I am still highly amused by the
Dawn's in trouble, it must be Tuesday "It's Christmas, Aliens must be invading" attitude. I also wonder if Queen Victoria's banishment of the Doctor has been rescinded by Queen Elizabeth, or if those things have a time limit. Then again there is the thought that no one would bother to enforce such a thing a century or more after the original banishing.
