There is no season three, although I heard someone say they were considering doing a "sequel" in the '80s.

There are only 2 seasons of LoM. The creators felt they could only sustain the show for a limited amount of time and so decided only to do 2 seasons.
P-C's right there is talk of a spin off, although I'm not sure when it's going to be set, I heard it would be based around Gene.

and sometimes wonder why they couldn't tell these stories in present day.
A major theme of the show, I think, is how police techniques have changed in the last 24 years.

It is hard to get used to, especially when it's fabulous and you just want more, but with LoM, I think it would have been hard to sustain the concept indefinitely. Which brings us back to skepticism about the American version. Last I'd heard, they'd only cast the "Annie" character. So much is going to depend on the Sam and Gene casting.

tiggy, he'll be appearing in the last couple of episodes of this season's Doctor Who. They'll be broadcast the end of June.
He was also in "State of Play" (as was Philip Glenister), which I never saw so I don't know what it's like, but as Bill Nighy, Kelly Macdonald and James McAvoy are also in it, and it's by Paul "Shameless" Abbott, it must be worth a look.
