What's the conventional Dr. Doom origin story? In the Ultimate universe and the upcoming movie, he gets his powers in the same event as the FF. But my memory of the original doesn't bear that out.

Originally he was a gypsy kid with a tragic childhood who made good, came to the US on academic scholarships, and ended up being Reed Richards' college roommate. He was performing mad scientist-style experiments to contact his mother's spirit in the netherworld. Reed tried to point out errors in his calculations but was ignored. Seance machine goes BOOM, scarring Victor and resulting in him blaming Reed for the debacle. He runs off to Tibet, gets taken in and trained by monks, who build his armor for him. Eventually he embarks on a super-villain career as the world's leading roboticist, takes over his homeland of Latveria, and becomes the Fantastic Four's nemesis.

Okay, cool. Apart from the, like, details, that jibes with my memory. The broad outline works. I can see why they'd compress origins for a remake.
Having watched the FF trailer -- I still hate that Alba chick. The effects look nifty, and the Torch looks perfect. Doable. Watchable.

ita, I think you and I are one on the pre-impression of the movie. I just counter my worries about Alba with the article I read in a Chicago magazine last weekend about McMahon using his native accent in the movie. (Apparently Latveria must be a postage-stamp sized country in Eastern Europe that was settled by Australians...)
