Anya: We should drop a piano on her. It always works for that creepy cartoon rabbit when he's running from that nice man with the speech impediment. Giles: Yes, or perhaps we could paint a convincing fake tunnel on the side of a mountain.

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

Powers: Ah, now I remember why I missed Deena.

Astounishing: Continues to be good. Joss sure isn't pulling any punches, is he?

Line that made me take a moment to laugh out loud: "You teach Ethics?"

Art Crawl!!!

There is some Batman/Catwoman story (2 issues I think?) -- is that possibly leading up to War Games?

I believe the metahuman thing stems from the Invasion! summer crossover, wherein about 95% of the human superheroes were revealed to get their powers from the meta-gene that a certain proportion of people carry.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

about 95% of the human superheroes were revealed to get their powers from the meta-gene that a certain proportion of people carry

Oh. So do you need an accident to trigger this meta-gene sometimes? Barry Allen, meta? Once activated, the powers are hereditary? Superman, not meta because alien, right? And then there are people like John Constantine or Tim Hunter -- meta? Aquaman -- not human, but is he meta for an Atlantean? Black Lightning?

I'm so confused.

I skimmed through the Another Nail or whatever they're calling it for this week. Firestorm's white -- I'm good with that. Halo's black. Anyone know why?

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

Why would they do something stupid like that? Isn't that the exact same idiotic Jedi thing that Lucas did?

So these would be metachlordians, then?

I didn't even get that far -- I figured it was just mutancy under another name.

To understand what happened at the diner, we shall use Mr. Papaya! This is upsetting because he's the friendliest of fruits.

Oh. So do you need an accident to trigger this meta-gene sometimes?

Or, it could be induced, or the person could be a natural mutant, but i any case, the idea is that NOT everybody could develop super-powers, but it turned out to be a larger chunk of the population then they thought.

Barry Allen, meta? Once activated, the powers are hereditary?

Yep. Bart would have the metagene.

Superman, not meta because alien, right?

Right.

And then there are people like John Constantine or Tim Hunter -- meta?

Most magical types weren't effected, but Dr. Fate was for some reason, so it's possible that Tim--whose powers are innate, not learned, may actually have it, whereas John--who's all learned, isn't. But that's a guess.

Aquaman

Wasn't affected. He's half human/half atlantean hybird.

Black Lightning?

Fairly straightforward, yeah.

Pretty much, although the way it manifests can create powers appropriate to the triggering stimulus, or the individual's personality, or (more ridiculously) their names. (Hence Snapper Carr, etc.)

My impression was that the magical characters were a different thing entirely, and that the late 80s version of Doctor Fate was affected because either Eric or Linda Strauss (the host bodies) happened to possess the meta gene in its latent form when the Gene Bomb went off. It's been hinted that Queen Titania might be Tim Hunter's mother, hence the prodigious talent for magic.

Let's just forget that bit, shall we? DC already has.

True. I just recall everyone being creeped out by Fate being out.

Still, a number of heroes were completely unaffected, such as Robotman, Starman (Will Payton version, because he had become entirely not human,) All the Green Lanterns, Martian Manhunter, and of course, almost anyone entirely without powers (although the virus CAUSED a few people to manifest latent powers, such as Max Lord.)
