Man, I'm failing to see how Batman, just by virtue of being Batman and not Bruce, hasn't suffered a break from reality.
It could be argued that he has, on occasion, suffered this break.

I'm into book 5 now of NML, and it rocks.
I think I'm going to buy the Batgirl trades too. Now that I've discovered B&N has free shipping if I buy two or more at a time.
As much as I love NML, it doesn't make me want to add a Batman title to my roster, but Batgirl, yes. It's so very about him anyway, much more than Robin is about him. But it's not slacking on Batgirl, who I am totally fascinated by.

Batman is completely real, and deals with people in a realistic-for-comics way. Bruce realizes in Year One that he needs to look even scarier than he is as a defensive maneuver - the suit isn't what makes him the avenger , it's just the outward manifestation of it.

Of course he's real! How could he not be?
Part of my interest in the character is because I seem him as grimmer as most of the rest of the good guys and how they deal with people.
He deals with people effectively, I'm absolutely not going to deny that. But his effectiveness hinges on him approaching life with about one emotion, if that.

Then it's not a reality break. You can call him "emotionally stunted," but hey, the comic makes that critique itself.

I can and happily will call him emotionally stunted. I just think accepting it as appropriate shows a divergence from the standards of the universe he operates in.
From time to time, he swings further off, and, yeah, I see that as intermittent breaks.
