Greece's financial crisis threatens to take down all of Western civilization - a civilization they themselves founded. A rather tragic irony - which is something they also invented. - Jon Stewart

So it's been a week and I'm wondering...have you guys made a decision yet? I haven't seen anything here but I thought maybe there were some backchannel convos going on.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

We have no competing proposals other than iStrata, but before we get that far, we need to tidy in preparation.

I may need a word with Steven about exporting the database once we've trimmed it, but otherwise, I can back up and restore in a new place pretty ... well, not quickly, but in a streamlined manner.

I see it something like:

  • choose new host/package (perhaps trivial)
  • archive everything that can be (DX can give time estimate)
  • sign up for new package
  • do a test backup and transfer (one day, weekend preferable)
  • test new system (which, may not be possible, if we haven't transferred the domain name)
  • boot everyone to PF
  • switch DNS entries
  • transfer code/data for real (one day, again weekend)
  • poke a little (one day, tops)
  • bring everyone back
  • thank Kristen & Monique profusely

A turkey in every toilet -- only in America!

test new system (which, may not be possible, if we haven't transferred the domain name)

How about transferring .net and testing that, before transferring .org? Would that be helpful?

Probably the simplest, yes. We were good and lucky that Kristen let us have a whole separate .net (instead of the subdomain we were testing with before). We can test with it and then disable it after.

Or maybe, on our own server, we can use it too. We'll see.

Kristen - Nov 06, 2003 10:37:11 am PST #6001 of 10000

So I guess the timeline depends on how long the archiving is going to take?

ETA: Also, if you're going dedicated, it takes about a week to set up a new server. So y'all should really order it soon.
