Wait, is this real-world child support, where the money goes to buy food for the kids, or MRA fantasyland child support where the women just buy Ferraris and cocaine? -Jessica

This problem has driven me to the edge of madness, and I'm dipping my toes in its rancid tide.

Not having has never been the thing I've regretted most in my life. Not trying is.

So, forgive me if this has already been discussed to death, but, well, Buffista...

1. We wish to stay with the MySQL/PHP combination.

2. Root user means the owner of the server itself, yes?

Our wings are not tired

So I know this came up before and there were concerns that it might not be a good way to go, but what would be the upside/downside to maintaining our own machine? We would obviously need to have a place to hook it up and pay for bandwidth, but we'd be guaranteed access at all levels and it would be dedicated.

I honestly don't know the advantages/disadvantages. Depending on the type of hardware needed, I could possibly even provide the machine.

You always do this. We get tipsy, and you take advantage of my love of the scientific method.

The biggest disadvantage at this point is that it's way more expensive.

1. We wish to stay with the MySQL/PHP combination.

All the code is written that way. It was tha assumption from the start.

2. Root user means the owner of the server itself, yes?

Yup, or anyone they trust enough to give that kind of access, which is usually no one.

We are Buffistas. This isn't our first apocalypse. -- Pix

Just as a hypothetical, how much more expensive to get our own server that we would maintain our own selves?

Not having has never been the thing I've regretted most in my life. Not trying is.

One reason I'm interested in this answer is that I mod on a board that has done just that. I'm not sure of all the particulars, but I can find out if it is worthwhile. (I'm no Techista, so I'm ignorant of many of the ins and outs of it. Not trying to step on any toes.)

The problem, as I understand it, isn't "usage parameters."

Actually, that's not entirely true. Nearly every webhost out there limits the number of connections. For most hosts, it's far far lower than what we have now. I know FutureQuest is something like 20. So even if we weren't having this leaking connections issue or whatever it is, we'd still be unable to house this board in most shared hosting environments.

how much more expensive to get our own server that we would maintain our own selves?

It depends on what you mean by our own server. A dedicated server that someone else houses and maintains for us would start at $200-$250 a month. I have no idea what the costs would be for buying a server and setting it up for ourselves.

Hardware wise something like an xserve starts reconditioned at about $2399. You can get some of the single rack space Dells for under $1000. I'm not sure what kind of horsepower we need for this system. The place to hookup and buy the bandwidth I'm thinking would be the bigger expense issue.

Nobody

I just experienced a little board spasm where I couldn't get in at all. In the interest of not burying my lead, I'll say that even though I was logged in, in the end, I resolved it by logging out and logging back in again.

What I noticed during the wonky (copied and pasted from my posts at PF Bureau, so the tenses are wrong and I'm in too much of a hurry now to correct them):

I'm getting the error message over and over and over again. I can sometimes get the message center, but can't actually get into any threads. And the BBaBB thread is showing 5404 messages with 5404 "new", but none of them are new for me (or at least not more than a handful).

eta...

Actually, in all the right-hand column threads, they're listed as if all posts in each thread are new for me. This isn't true of the center threads, though.

I still can't get into a single thread.

eta (again)

In the center threads, I'm not showing any posts labeled as "new." Now, I know I'm not up to date in threads like "Music". So that's not right, either.

When I click on a thread, and get the error message, if I am lucky enough to get a page with some of the righthand links next to the error message (where the posts should be), the link for message center has disappeared. There's just Buffista Home, then Read New, Set Profile, and View Bookmarks.

I'm not sure what kind of horsepower we need for this system.

We're currently on a dual xeon server with 2gb ram. Before that, we were on a single P3 with 1gb ram.

The place to hookup and buy the bandwidth I'm thinking would be the bigger expense issue.

Yes. I think this would be the real cost concern.
