Our wings are not tired

Hardware wise something like an xserve starts reconditioned at about $2399. You can get some of the single rack space Dells for under $1000. I'm not sure what kind of horsepower we need for this system. The place to hookup and buy the bandwidth I'm thinking would be the bigger expense issue.

Nobody

I just experienced a little board spasm where I couldn't get in at all. In the interest of not burying my lead, I'll say that even though I was logged in, in the end, I resolved it by logging out and logging back in again.

What I noticed during the wonky (copied and pasted from my posts at PF Bureau, so the tenses are wrong and I'm in too much of a hurry now to correct them):

I'm getting the error message over and over and over again. I can sometimes get the message center, but can't actually get into any threads. And the BBaBB thread is showing 5404 messages with 5404 "new", but none of them are new for me (or at least not more than a handful).

eta...

Actually, in all the right-hand column threads, they're listed as if all posts in each thread are new for me. This isn't true of the center threads, though.

I still can't get into a single thread.

eta (again)

In the center threads, I'm not showing any posts labeled as "new." Now, I know I'm not up to date in threads like "Music". So that's not right, either.

When I click on a thread, and get the error message, if I am lucky enough to get a page with some of the righthand links next to the error message (where the posts should be), the link for message center has disappeared. There's just Buffista Home, then Read New, Set Profile, and View Bookmarks.

I'm not sure what kind of horsepower we need for this system.

We're currently on a dual xeon server with 2gb ram. Before that, we were on a single P3 with 1gb ram.

The place to hookup and buy the bandwidth I'm thinking would be the bigger expense issue.

Yes. I think this would be the real cost concern.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

I'm terribly against colocating a server we own. You also have to pay extra for them to do stuff like backups and maintenance. It's not part of the basic packages I've seen.

ita, you might want to take a look at Dreamhost's managed plans. They seem to calculate MySQL usage differently.

The coneuries? They used to make my head hurt. But now I have added motivation.

Their upside is you can buy coneuries, the way some hosts will sell you extra bandwidth.

Yeah, that's what I thought when I read it. Going over would hopefully just mean a few extra bucks.

A turkey in every toilet -- only in America!

Maybe I'm being cynical, but if a host is going to charge us for additional MySQL connections, why would they want to tweak their end to prevent the problems we're currently having? Don't we want to find someone who's willing to work with us to figure out a cure?

But how do we determine that ahead of time? At least with Dreamhost, one wouldn't get shut down, which is a step ahead of many options with unfriendly host configurations.

See, I'm cynical in a different way. I think the chances of any host tweaking their servers, that other accounts reside on, for us is slim to none.
