We are Buffistas. This isn't our first apocalypse. -- Pix

Can we prevent direct linking from external sources to specific pages?

I think that would be very useful, and then at least people would repost the comments rather than send people over here.

Just a thought, if it's feasible, which I realize it might not be.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

You always do this. We get tipsy, and you take advantage of my love of the scientific method.

Not any more.

A turkey in every toilet -- only in America!

Can we prevent direct linking from external sources to specific pages?

How do you see that working exactly? I don't mean the code - I mean what's the functionality? Everytime website I've seen that prevents direct linking from outside the site has a simple workaround: You go to the front page first, then paste in the link and hit enter.

I was thinking that maybe we could disallow a link to a post unless the user is logged in, but, the way things are coded now, I think that would prevent un-logged-in users from reading any threads. I don't think we want to do that.

It can be done, but it's not a very web-friendly thing to do. I'd recommend holding off on it until it looks like we're going to have a real bandwidth problem.

Also, if we prevent direct linking to posts, it means that the people who are coming here solely to read those posts may chew up valuable bandwidth looking for them.
