Well, Sylar is taller than she, and if she was trying to stab him in the stomach and he turned the scissors around, it might have reached her heart.

didn't so much have a problem with the turning around as it was kind of obvious they were both struggling to gain control of them
Well, the thing is, they were pointed toward Sylar the whole time. Mom was trying to kill him, but he wasn't trying to kill her; he was just trying to pull the scissors away from her.
wave your hands with me, P-C!
The blood painting was worth it!
okay, thank you all for clearing up that you don't know where Sylar got the freezing power.
What power did he use to create the physical structure of the snow globe? Is there a glass-walls-creating power that I don't know about?
No idea, le nubian! I wondered whether he'd eaten the brain of a bubble-maker or something.

perhaps freezing water vapor? telekinesis to make a bubble?
Man, dude's got skillz.
Vortex, wow. A possibility that never occurred to me.
My wife pondered last night how Sylar always knows how to use his powers instantly, whereas most of the supers take forever to figure out just the one power, and Peter's pretty much floundered all over the place with his abilities.
I think it comes down to his basic ability, which is figuring out how things work. Which means that he's capable of pulling off many much niftier stunts than some of the people whom he took the powers from in the first place.
Well, I think too: sometimes Peter doesn't know when he acquires powers. Which has to be a bit unsettling.
Sylar knows exactly what he is getting much of the time, so he is prepared.
BTW, I thought he was going to melt the scissors that his mother held. I don't know why he didn't. Or use his TK to toss them across the room. Do you think they were going for a "Carrie" reference?
I would swear that towards the beginning of the series, it was mentioned that one of Sylar's victims was frozen to death. I think it was in a conversation between Matt and the FBI agent. Cause I distinctly remember thinking about him having killed the Iceman, or perhaps Mr. Freeze.
What I wonder is about Sylar's regenerative powers. I mean he has not managed to kill Clair, so how does he keep recovering from big time blows to the head, and being totured almost to death. (Maybe his TK is cushioning the blows). At any rate he has killed a lot more people than we've seen him kill, so he definitely has powers we have not seen.
