"Canon" even?

Swouncing

Whitefonted from [S7 whitefonted episode name] "Potential" (script - don't know if it's aired):

BUFFY: My death is what could make you a Slayer

DAWN: She has to die. I mean, if I ever was the Slayer it would mean she died.

[Edit: I agree with Schmoker - it makes much more sense that since no slayer was called upon Buffy's death at the end of S5, the line now goes through Faith, the way it went through Kendra when Kendra was alive. But, you know, sense may be more linked to math than to storytelling, so the fact that something didn't happen doesn't mean it can't happen, if I'm making any sense]

[Another Edit: somewhat freaky x-post with Jon]

A turkey in every toilet -- only in America!

don't both logic and cannon-to-this-point tell us the line runs through Faith?

No, because
1. we don't know absotively posilutely that a new Slayer wasn't called after The Gift, and
2. The writers could always retcon that because death #2 was a mystical death, it didn't trigger the slayer-calling-doohickey.

My point is that just because something hasn't happened doesn't mean that it canonically can never happen.

Up with the sun

I think we can be pretty certain about #1. But I understand Jon's point, and I also understand we wanted the FAQ to be free of major S7 spoilers. And yeah, the writers can change their minds tomorrow about thisor any point.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

I'm in the camp where we can't be sure of #1, since if a new slayer turns up in Sunnydale, there are plenty of easy and plausible reasons why we hadn't met her yet.

Using this logic, what's the point of the new FAQ? We don't know anything absotively if you put it to that test.

It's as if we were saying that we don't really know Willow is gay because she's been with a guy and the writers could always change their minds.

We can't be sure of either number 1 or 2.

BtVS S7 (NAFDA safe) white font

And this story line with the SiTs is likely to send anything we get too specific on - arse over tea kettle. I'd limit it to comments that mention that off-screen, Joss has said the line runs through Faith but that was subject to change if he got a better idea and leave it as such.

Also

And maybe a link to Cindy's essay on the subject.

Angel S4 (NAFDA safe) white font

Yeah, except Mere, DeKnight and Bell might have just frigged that all up too, last week - having Cordelia speculate on why Angel can't remember the Beast but Angelus can. I forget her exact words, but they pretty much tied memory to soul. This of course, is a ridiculous tie, because ANGEL REMEMBERS ANGELUS'S EVIL DEEDS BECAUSE THAT'S PART OF THE CURSE TO REMEMBER AND FEEL REMORSE and oh, yeah - that makes me really ranty, so I'm pretending it didn't happen. Carry on.

A turkey in every toilet -- only in America!

It has never been stated onscreen that the slayer line now runs only through Faith. Period.
