We Need Natter 7 and We Might Take Yours

John H - Jan 16, 2003 2:54:17 pm PST #2965 of 10001

Hey everyone.

I've been very good about Not Nattering While At Work, my New Year's resolution, but yesterday I wanted to log in and find something about HTML from the Buffistechnology thread.

To my horror, I found that buffistas.org is now noted in work's content filter, and this message comes up "This site is not work related".

It doesn't mean I can't come here, it just means that a log is kept of non-work sites I visit and my manager told. My manager doesn't care.

But I'm telling you guys because our IT department doesn't make these decisions by itself, it subscribes to a service called SmartFilter. I remember discussing them before on WX, I think.

It's not a terrible thing, but we should maybe check out our listing there or whatever, and make sure that a few random slingings-around of the P-word haven't got us accidentally listed as a full-on porn site.

Ack, John, that's QUITE scary. Er. I have no idea how to help, but let's do look into it...

I tracked down the tool that lets you see if and how you're listed by SmartFilter: [link] and we're just listed under "Entertainment, Chat", which is kind of dismissive but fine.

Perhaps we should take it as a coming-of-age thing. We're not just a good place to chat, we're officially a good place to chat; so much so that people should be discouraged...

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

We're not just a good place to chat, we're officially a good place to chat; so much so that people should be discouraged...

Yeah, good one.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Websense still doesn't know who we are, which is nice. And they think worldcrossing is IT.

Heh.
