And now my boy's in love. All hearts and flowers. But, doesn't it freak you out that she used to change your diapers? I mean, when you think about it, the first woman you boned is the closest thing you've ever had to a mother. Doing your mom and trying to kill your dad. Hm. There should be a play.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

I think that's probably the list of what sites the posters were at when they linked to us, no?

Yup, that's it. If by "linked" you mean "clicked through".

And groups.google.com means USENET, effectively.

edit: Yup, referrals, hosts they were at when they came here ...

"You can't put a price on the joy of not giving a shit." -Zenkitty

I blame Shrift.

Hey! What did I do?

If the trolls are finding their way here because of me, then... then... I guess I'll delete all of my websites and go *poof* in a BNF snit of epic proportions!!!

t puts a gun to the BRQG's head

I'll Minear it, I swear I will!

Seriously, though, I can take some links down, but I think Variety has a wider readership than I do. I'm just sayin'.

The lost sheep grow teeth, forsake their lambs, and lie with the lions.

The trolling has been surprisingly light. Just the two (or two and a half), really. I'm hoping that it's nothing more than 2002 getting its last licks in before we take it out to the back forty to put it out of its misery.

Doubt that.

More interesting would be the IP addresses of the machines used to make the posts. Some web servers log that.

If I only had a brain...

Sorry, Shrift, I was teasing. I really shouldn't, not in these parlous times.

the IP addresses of the machines used to make the posts. Some web servers log that.

I think we have that info too, but ita doesn't have the time or access to do anything with it right now, that's all.

I think she was quoting referrals from a pre-munged set of stats provided by the hosting company.

Yup. I can open some of the log from the 24th onwards here, but not all. And the IP addresses are unresolved, so it's really not going to be statistically informative.

Rob - Dec 27, 2002 5:42:46 pm PST #1633 of 10001

The question is, can we associate and IP address with the posting of a message? Because what we really want to know is if two messages with different user IDs are from the same IP address. We don't need to resolve the IPs, just compare them.

This might be a lot of work. Perhaps it's not worthwhile.

It might be useful, in the future, to log the IP address of the poster in the database along with the post. I wonder if that's possible.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

It'll take aligning posting time, referrer, and URL. It'll be a bit of work.

As for saving the IP address with the post, it gives me a bit of a big brother quease. I don't actually want anyone to know where I'm posting from. Also, if two users have the same ISP, they can easily have the same IP, depending on how the software works. I know AOL used to make it look like all of their subscribers were from VA.
