Having a party? Organizing a local F2F? Know something that we all really need to know? Announce it! Want to discuss anything posted here? Take it to Natter. Any natter here will be deleted.
Okay, I'm a mostly-lurking newbie whom no one knows, but I think this is really exciting: I'm about to go off on a grand adventure for science! I'm going to be part of Extreme 2003, an expedition to the East Pacific Rise (a few days' sail west of Costa Rica) to study deep sea hydrothermal vents! I feel very lucky to have gotten this opportunity as part of my graduate studies. In particular I'm working with interesting molecules in the Pompeii worm, a critter that lives right on hot vents at the bottom of the ocean, and may be the most heat-tolerant higher organism on the planet. We'll be spending almost a month at sea on the research vessel Atlantis, which is the mother ship for the submersible Alvin. While this hasn't yet been decided, I'm hoping to get a chance to ride Alvin to to bottom of the ocean!
As part of the expedition, coordinated through the University of Delaware College of Marine Studies, an educational outreach is taking place on the Internet. Students from around the globe will be able to follow our expedition via a web site. I invite you to do the same at:

(at the moment this page is just a placeholder; the entire site should go live within the next week, so keep checking--I leave on 27 November and we leave port the next day!)
Attention, Secret Santa Slackers!
In exactly one week I'm going to assign gifters to giftees. This is your last chance to participate!
If you have already e-mailed either Dani or me - you may stop paying attention now. If you haven't but want to join, please send me your details (board name, snail-mail address) to my profile address. Thanks!
Signed, your tiny Jewish not-really-Santa.

Rob Hall, the designer of all those gorgeous demons on Angel, asked if we wouldn't mind polling the fans, to ask which demons they'd really lurve to see at the party.
Post suggestions, and I'll put together a poll from them.
I heart Rob Hall. AND YOU SHOULD, TOO.
Wolfram & Hart Annual Revue
We still have a handful of tickets left!

I'm having a fabulous time putting this together, yo.
Also? Make sure you give Maya extra love when she comes around. Dealing with me, it's not so much fun.
There's a LiveJournal for the Angel Party, for those of you who dig that sort of thing. Weirdos.
I'm posting this on behalf of the Browncoat Ball Committee, a group of Firefly fans that I am a part of, who are volunteering their time, talents, resources and enthusiasm to organize the very first Browncoat Ball, which is being held in Chicago, Sept. 17-19, 2004. We will be staying in the hotel with the other Browncoat Ball attendees and will be paying the full events fee. Okay, now that Thanksgiving is over...
LAistas, I'm having a Meara is here/holiday brunch, and I hope you can all be there. Sunday, December 14th, 11:30 to whenever, at my place. I'll send out an email to the list with my address, but please email me if you need directions or anything.
I'm cleaning house and have decided to part with my Spikeloost shirt. It is a size medium baby tee and I'll send it to the first person who emails me. Profile addy is good.
I would like to urge as many Buffistas as possible to call any or all libraries in their area to request the Firefly DVDs.
Just a suggestion I was going to make in the firefly thread, but Press probably will reach more people.
I was at the public library in town yesterday and decided to ask the information desk about how one goes about requesting they buy a DVD for their collection. she offered to take my suggestion and pass it on to the proper suggestion/request for buying.
It appears that although they would not buy it as soon as it comes out, this may be the perfect time to request a DVD set, as most libraries budgets start the first of the calendar year.
(Of course, you can add a side note about Buffy DVDs....)
Basically this info is what I suggest:
- The name of the DVD "Firefly - The Complete Series"
- Twentieth Century Fox Home Video
- The release date of Dec 9.
- Reinforce that you understand things are not bought quickly.
- Mention that although cancelled, the series has enough critical and fan support for a feature film.
- Currently ranked in the top 50 in Amazon.com DVD sales.
- Thank them for their assistance.
