I was charmed (albeit somewhat perplexed) by the fannish sensibility of many of the music choices -- it's like the director was trying to vid Canada. --loligo on the Olympic Opening Ceremonies

Raquel in Natter:

I have also been pondering where Betsy gets these links. My theory is that any powerful and incomprehensible force becomes deified by the culture that it benefits and punishes, and certain members of that culture will feel the call to become an intermediary between the god-thing and the people.

Betsy's an Internet Shaman.

The status is NOT quo.

bon bon

I'm so OVER being judged on taste by someone who gets kicked and punched in the head for fun.

ita

And this is just more evidence that you can't be trusted.

I've never been kicked in the head. And even if I had, what I do for fun is kick other people. "Other" is such the important word.

billytea

Indeed. Because without it, you're left with "I kick people, possibly including myself". Which doesn't so much say 'martial arts' as it does 'violent uncontrollable leg spasms'.

And now I'm surely going to hell, because I just had an idea for an event at the Special Olympics.

My tagline and life are a work in progress.

Allyson in Minearverse:

It's all very McGyver. "Here's 3 dollars, a case of red bull, the set from Alf, and three crackheads we found behind the House of Pies. Make a television show, and make sure it'll appeal to 18-49 males."

'we all walk this earth feeling we are frauds. The trick is to be grateful and hope the caper doesn't end any time soon"

Polter-Cow:

I think scholars should gather to espouse the merits of me. It would be very validating.

What is even happening?

Susan on Motherhood: Oh, and I saw this documentary on feral children that included a comparison of the brains of normal and neglected toddlers. The neglected kids' language centers are actually stunted or absent. And even though I rationally know Annabel is getting all the language exposure she needs just by being a wanted child in a reasonably loving family, I catch myself just pumping her brain full of English every time I'm holding her. Which includes singing my way through the old Baptist Hymnal I salvaged when my high school church got new ones, and reading the Aubrey/Maturin and Hornblower novels to her.

Kid's gonna have an odd and bloody vocabulary.

Nutty

But be vigilant, people! We'll only continue to exist as long as enough of us persist in the shared fiction. If your attention lapses, suddenly we might all be stranded in Mongolia or something.

Deena

At least we'd be together.

Nutty

Yeah, in MONGOLIA!!

(No offense to Mongolians. I have a yurt-avoidance issue.)

DXMachina

Check, no yurts for Nutty.

Mongolia seems like it might be fun for a short while. They have horses. Okay, all I actually know about Mongolia is what I saw in PBS special starring Julia Roberts.

Not having has never been the thing I've regretted most in my life. Not trying is.

Noise Design in the F2F thread:

Does Scarred Baptist taste anything like blackened catfish?

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

In Minearverse, a newbie proves to be a true Buffista:

The Partyman: Ooh. Might have to try and get to see that!

PaperDragon: You should replace 'might' with 'I', 'have' with 'am', 'to' with 'definitely', 'try' with 'going'. Switch the 'to' with the 'and', finally deleting the 'get'.

That's the pain / That cuts a straight line down through the heart / We call it love

Polter-Cow in Bureaucracy:

If nothing we post matters, then all that matters is what we post.
