Tara: Do you have any books on robots? Giles: Oh, yes, dozens. There's a lot of research to be done in order to--no, I'm lying. Haven't got squat. I just like watching Xander squirm.

Lurching from one disaster to the next.

Re the earlier discussion about the mythology blah blah...

... just to throw the vampire amongst the virgins ... BtVS owes more to Asian vamp mythology/bullshit than it does to European, since it is a rip-off of an Anime title. Just saying, y'know.

Of course, it also owes more to Phlobotin mythology than anything else.

Didn't the 1992 Buffy precede the anime?

Remember, remember/the fifth of November/the Gunpowder Treason and Plot/I see no reason/Why Gunpowder Treason/Should ever be forgot.

Which anime?

If you are talking about cute high school girls killing monsters, while that is practically its whole genre...

No, the Anime goes back a long way before '92.

I realise that but there is one title in particular (the name of which escapes me) that bears closest resemblance to the concept of BtVS. It was first mentioned way back on the first TT thread[s]. I'd have to ask a mate of mine if he knows what it the particular title is b/c he knows more about Anime than me. I'm not a big fan of the genre -- and have become even less of a fan thanks to the likes of Pokemon and Dragonball Z et al.

I guess I need to watch Wings of Honneamise again. I missed that theme last time around.

Now let us crush something soft and watch it fountain blood. That is a girlish thing to want to do, yes?

What do you mean by close resemblance? One girl chosen to battle the demons? More specific? Less?

(Note -- I'm not asking just to nag, but my anime-fan friends aren't Buffy watchers, and now I want to know, so I'm fishing for detail before I go annoy them.)

'we all walk this earth feeling we are frauds. The trick is to be grateful and hope the caper doesn't end any time soon"

Now I'm picturing a live-action Project A-Ko, only with AH, CC, and SMG as the protagonists....

yeah, along those lines. I'm not saying BtVS is a direct rip-off of anime, just that the concept of a "mere girl" having the power to fight vampires and demons is not something Joss orginated -- which he'd be the first to acknowledge.

I'd be careful about using it to try and convince your friends to watch, however, since it is actually the reason my friend doesn't watch the show. He's a purist pain in the arse when it comes to things like that.

Don't worry, I'm quite willing to go on trying to convert them by the sheer force of my endless nattering about Buffy -- hunting the anime connection is purely for my own curiosity. Thanks, though.

btw ... as an Off-Topic aside; caught the live-action version of Crying Freeman the other night. Not too shabby at all. Not a great movie but a lot better than I you'd expect from a low budget flick. Not that I started watching it with any expectations, since I'd never heard of the original anime versions, so didn't even know it was a live action adaption.

ita would love it for the various scenes of Mark Dacascos in next to nothing. :)
