ALL my non-sibling relatives are UnAmerican. Hell, actually, when push comes to shove, the only USian-by-birth in my generation are my brother and myself.
I *love* the UnAmerican title. It's part of Buffista culture. Lots of things that are part of Buffista culture take a little getting used to, seeing as the language is almost its own dialect at this point.
I would hate to see it lost because it might cause some "eeps" to the unfamiliar-with-our-ways. It's a term in context which I love as much as I love NonUSian.
I'm proud to be an Un-American.
You're a vampire. Oh, I'm sorry. Is that an offensive term? Should I say 'Undead American'?

I love UnAmerican, because it's co-opting the enemy's language. But I'll leave it up to the Unnies. You'll always be

Yes the UnAmerican reference really bridled me.
Um. Tough?

With all due respect, I think that the irony is clear enough - much like the title of the show itself. Some people will shy away from a show called
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
because they won't see that it's ironic. Some people may also shy away from a thread with this particular title, but I don't think that the board should be expected to dumb down to accomodate anyone's inability to pick up on cultural reference points. At the end of the day this board
is
predominantly American and the Jossverse shows are American and crammed with popular culture references which are primarily US-based. Moreover the board is pretty much characterised by a blend of popular culture and high culture and an awareness of things like McCarthyism - as is the Jossverse itself.
I pretty much think those of us based in the UK/elsewhere need to just suck it up if any US cultural references go over our heads. Given that the thread title was coined by UnAmericans, given the conscious cultural references of the term "Buffistas" itself (with which "UnAmerican" chimes) and given the generally supportive and tongue-in-cheek ethos of the board, I kind of think this is your problem, Zoe.
Irony - it doesn't just mean "like iron".
...Er. That would be a generally supportive ethos not being demonstrated by me right now, obviously. Still, the rest of the folks here, who are far nicer and fluffier than me, are generally a supportive bunch, and not likely to go around making
genuinely
bigoted thread titles.
and with that Fay vanished in a puff of smoke, having failed quite spectacularly to play the diplomatic card.
Actually, it's good that we're discussing this, because the current thread title did not get a lot of input. I believe it was rolling over and nobody was around, John H pulled up the Anya quote and I suggested using the whole thing, and that was that.
And come to think of it, it's not titled like most of the other threads. It's not UnAmerican Buffistas: blah blah.
re-reads own post, giggling madly.
Man, am I just the most offensive woman on the face of the planet, or what? I should just have come over all Rio and done the ASS CAPS thing.
Definitely time for bed.
Dude, it's a direct quotation from an ep. It's gloriously apposite. I
totally
cannot sympathise with getting one's knickers in a twist over it being offensive.
But then, I'm a stroppy cow at times. As you'll have gathered.
