"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

Kathy,

your sister is correct, but from what I have heard from tech writers, having and using flash can drain the battery pretty quickly. (pros and cons here). I don't really miss flash video on my ipad2. But I go to youtube or watch videos I purchase or convert for the ipad.

There are a couple of browsers for the ipad (and iphone) that purport to show some flash. Maybe icab browser is one of them?

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

I adore the Galaxy, FWIW. I can't work how this isn't a more serious contender in the tablet space. It has almost every app I'm looking for (you want something free to tell you what comics are up this week, you're out of luck), it's extensively customisable even without rooting (jailbreaking), it's bigger screen and thinner than the iPad, and the graphics are gorgeous. I'm *so* pleased with mine. It's my favourite tech purchase since the MacBook Pro. And that's saying something.

You might want to check out the apps available through Samsung, first, though.

You don't have to worry about that. It's more about what apps are available through Google. You know, I take it back. There have been some that haven't been optimised for tablet, so you won't be running Taxi Magic on it any time soon, but I think many of those need cell tower access.

Not so nice is that I'm about to ruin a Friday morning for a bunch of people because of a series of unfortunate events and an upset foreign government. - shrift

Erin,

Insent on the other matter.

Since T-Mobile is switching to AT&T in March, and we have an unlimited text, talk and data plan that will switch over -- and since I'm up for an upgrade in March and am looking to upgrade to an iPhone then, hopefully -- we decided that the Nook Color was the most logical choice, since really, if we're at home, D's got a netbook and I have the laptop, and um, iTouch. If I DO upgrade to an iPhone, I will be trading in the Touch, which is a 2nd gen with 8 gigs.

This is by no means definite. The Justice Department has denied the merger, and at&t is going to court over it. A trial date has been set for February 13, 2012. Your best bet is to plan like the merger is not even contemplated, which means that the iPhone is not on the table for T-Mobile. Your rate plan will not remain the same if you take a subsidized phone upgrade. at&t has only committed to honoring T-Mobile plans as long as the customer makes no changes, including upgrading their phone.

All is well that ends in pizza.

I was contemplating one of the $99 HP tablets before my illness.

now it's out of the question, but I wonder if anyone here who got one likes it?

Calli: My people have a saying. A man who trusts can never be betrayed, only mistaken.Avon: Life expectancy among your people must be extremely short.

What I've hear is the tie-breaker that moves a lot of people to the ipad over the Galaxy is that the touchscreen on the ipad works so much better that there is no comparison. I've never used either so that is second-hand, but I have hear that repeatedly.

A dress should be tight enough to show you're a woman but loose enough to flee from zombies. — Ginger

Maria, that is good to know! Thanks. I would LIKE an iPhone, but I will research T-Mobile smartphones now; I'm not wedded to it. I just need something that will let me be a bit more operational on the go for work related stuff...and, you know, life.

I am a woman of various inclinations and only some of the time are they to burn everything down in frustration

IIRC, B&N is going to be announcing their own tablet sometime this week, right?

“Not dead yet!”

Poking head in to ask for help in extracting video from a disc so it can be saved as a file for uploading. This isn't a commercial disc-- it's just the disc I had recorded at my ballroom dance competition. I've been trying to use VLC, but none of the streaming/saving formats are allowing me to open it. (I'm on a Mac, btw) Any suggestions?
