Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!
Not to hijack the thread from Shir, since she is in need. But I heard this on NPR today and is rather cool. Strokes the geek in two ways, history and science!
Old ship logs help predict weather patterns
Climate scientists want to use weather reports made by British sailors in World War I but they are hidden in handwritten ship logs, and impossible for computer scanners to read. So the scientists have enlisted online volunteers to grab that weather data for computer analysis. Along the way, transcribers are reading about sea battles and daily life nearly a century ago on a British war ship. The World’s Clark Boyd has more. (Audio available after 5PM Eastern)
And here is the website they are talking about:

How cool is that? You get to read through ships logs! Seems they would take weather readings every 4 hours, no matter what was going on. "enemy off port bow, temp is..."

(sorry, that tag doesn't close easy, especially when you are talking history and something that could help with climate prediction!)
No longer in need, but thanks!
And, since I forgot my manners due to the time and the fact that I have only NOW finished writing the budget proposal.
Thank you, Buffistas, for making my first week at work, well, work.
I'm trying to figure out the cheapest way to the Internet once I move. Any thoughts on dial-up? It's been eons since I had it.
Any thoughts on dial-up?
You mean apart from an involuntary shudder?
I have budgeting issues. I may have no choice.
Have you scouted the new location for open wifi?
Not yet. The neighbors are a bank and a funeral parlor.
quester, can you keep the Internet and give up cable?
I'm not even considering cable. I'm just trying to keep the minimum until I can figure out what I can really afford. This is all kind of happening fast and isn't really very well planned.
I'm moving out of my sister's house and leaving the free satellite and dsl behind.
