Occasionally I’m callous and strange

My mom, who loves me very very much, is making noises about buying me a netbook for my upcoming birthday. She had a good rec for MIS WIND or some variety with 6 cell battery, 2.6 lbs. I know next to nothing about netbooks, as i've been burying my head in the sand for years given my lack of finances to buy such things for myself. But since Mommy is willing to shell out...i know that i like the idea of lightweight. Um, what other things should i be looking for in a netbook? Anyone have rec's? Macbook air is right out, we're more in the $300-500 ranger here ;)

I've got my eye on a Asus Eee 1000HE or this newer one. I like the battery life since I see using it only places were there isn't a place to plug-in.

I don't have first hand experience with any though.

I want to wait until Windows 7 is out first and get it with that instead of XP Home.

I'm rather liking Windows 7 on my desktop.

What Gud linked to is what I just bought, except I got the less-new one, with the 6 hours battery life instead of 10, or whatever.

I'm going to take it on my trip tomorrow and test it in actual traveling situation. We shall see. But so far in "too lazy to go get my bigger laptop from another room in the house" it's been entirely workable for my rather light web use.

I must obey the inscrutable exhortations of my soul—Calvin and Hobbs

I got the Asus eee 1000HE, and I love it for traveling. I wouldn't want to use it for hours of freelance work or video editing, but for internet, email, and the occasional .doc file it's great. It's also light and got me complements in the Detroit airport.

The slightly smaller keyboard takes a little getting use to, as does the smallish screen. Otherwise, it's fab.

If I have tabs enabled in IE 8 - is there any reason why tabs should not be working?

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

Huh. So with Android and this, they now have two computer OS's.

From my impressions of Windows 7 they will have their work cut out for them. I've only heard good things about Win 7 on netbooks as well. Though MS might shoot itself in the foot by imposing hardware limitations on netbooks that run Win 7.
