The Serenity cover looks like what someone would draw if they were trying to draw a parody of Firefly.
Dark Horse describes the cover artist as "critically acclaimed".
Thank goodness somebody else is drawing the actual story.

I noticed on the Dark Horse site that they aren't even showing the second cover. . . like it's so disturbing that they're afraid to show it to us.
It's wrong. In... ways. Kaylee looks all hopped up on something. And River's head has been replaced by a chubby Lucy Liu.
FWiW, Adam Hughes is a highly acclaimed comic book artist, and I do think the painting technique he's using shows a lot of skill. He just happened to pick extremely freaky facial expressions for the women on this particular cover.
