Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

Does the pitch of the whine vary with the engine speed?

What kind of car is it?

"I'm useless alone." // "We're all useless alone. It's a good thing you're not alone."

It's an '02 Accord, V6. I haven't noticed the whine really varying with the engine speed, and actually, the engine doesn't even have to be on for the whine to happen. It starts as soon as I turn the key the first notch, before the engine starts.

It's not coming over the radio speakers, is it?

eta:

It's not related to the heater fan, is it?

If you're going through hell/keep on going/don't slow down/keep your fear from showing/you might be gone/'fore the devil even knows you're there

Does the radio turn off when you honk the horn?

Just my dad then, huh?

Nope.

I don't think so. It persists when everything is turned off -- audio system, heater, etc.

Does the radio turn off when you honk the horn?

...no.

Does it happen when you turn the key to the Accessory position?

Yes.

Googling (and you) seems to suggest that alternator whine should increase when the engine's running at higher speed. I may need to sit in my garage and test it a little.

The other thing googling suggests is that alternator whine can bleed into the sound system, but since the whine isn't actually coming from the speakers, I'm hoping I can eliminate that.

What is even happening?

Please don't run your car in your garage. I don't even have independent confirmation of your singing, yet.
