I heard somewhere (I think on Countdown) that Katie Holmes became friends with Brooke Shields either at the hospital or soon after in post-birth bonding, so Tom probably had to suck it up and apologize.
I love this interpretation, since it casts Brooke in a favorable light and hints at Katie still retaining a bit of agency and making Maverick jump through a hoop or two in payback for the trained seal act she's been putting on this past year. The thought of him grinding molars he's spent thousands on while smiling through cheerful dinners and playdates with Shields and her kids in attendance does my evil little heart good.

I actually just did planing that didn't involve going "eh, whatever you want"! I think I need to stick a gold star to my forehead. (backstory is...well, I'm incredibly unplanny when it comes to groups. I've always torn between BEND TO MY WILL and Um, I don't want to miff anyone which results in incredible weenitude sometimes. So, gold star.)
