Pete (and rest of frag-fest-folk). It looks like I am GO on the X-box! :) dunno all the details. He's in process of moving this week. Possibly take possession in about 2 weeks or so. I now know what the gift cards will go towards! So, is there a generic 2 month free trial thang for Xbox Live?
Omnis, a couple of things to bear in mind.
1) Make sure the box is not modded. If there's a single mod-chip in there and you go on Xbox Live you will be banned FOREVER. And I really do mean forever. They log your ISP.
2) 2 month free trials aren't given out anymore because they were used by people to cause trouble because they didn't care if the account was banned (this was in the days when only the account was banned, not the ISP.)
3) Apparently, the full year subscription for the regular Xbox is actually quite hard to get ahold of these days. Microsoft is making it harder to join Live with an old box because they just love annoying their current customer base who hasn't yet invested several hundred bucks in the latest hardware. They are asshats. I'd start looking around for one of the subscriptions now. No, I don't think the 360 subscriptions are useable.

High school English. I don't know any more specifics beyond that. I should find out on Thurs or Friday. I have all day classes at the uni on those days to prep for student teaching. Eventually (this summer!), I'll get my certification in English with an endorsement in Theatre. When I get I job, I'd really really rather teach theatre, but those jobs are few.

I'm not trying to put anyone off Live, the service is great, it's just Microsoft's crappy attitude toward long-term original Xbox support that's annoying. However, I can't see them making it impossible to use Live via an original box as they'd be opening themselves up for lawsuits.
The rest of my info is just a flag to be cautious about second hand goods.

Well, did you buy it from somewhere like EB Games or Gamestop? They should have some kind of guarantee that the box isn't modded. Have your roommate check with wherever it was purchased from.
Besides that, I'm not absolutely sure how you can check, as I've never modded a box. I'm sure there's plenty info out there on the interwebby.
