Well, did you buy it from somewhere like EB Games or Gamestop? They should have some kind of guarantee that the box isn't modded. Have your roommate check with wherever it was purchased from.
Besides that, I'm not absolutely sure how you can check, as I've never modded a box. I'm sure there's plenty info out there on the interwebby.

I made a decently big unfixable (unless I buy more fabric and I went with NO) mistake. I didn't cut the front on the fold. D'OH! So, I have a seam running down the front. Oh well. It's my first dress.
