The DVR universe doesn't really count though.
It's assumed that people using a DVR don't watch commercials and the Neilson numbers are for advertisers. I didn't read the article but he's right that the "larger unniverse" isn't accounted for but that might be a slam on Neilson and have less to do with a pick up or not.

We're dealing with that right now. Timeshifted viewers don't count - they are simply observed.
I knew they were working on SGA this year but had assumed SG1 was grandfathered. Maybe there was just no point int keeping it on the air - they had their syndication numbers, and it had to be getting expensive...
Oh, now they have a great spot to launch a some of their new shows....but wow.
With DVR numbers, though, they can get more granular. They can know which ads DVR users skip.
I think (hope?) that the DVR will become so popular that they need to work out how to count them profitably, and how to advertise to DVR watchers. Because if the user base does grow, what else is there to do?

Or worse, they could do additional critters in the bottom margin -- not just the unbelieveably annoying and intrusive show-ads, but a constant stream of brands and logos!

I don't mind product placement if they work out how to do it unstupidly.

How committed is SciFi to a Tuesday line-up?
There was that hilarious Alias episode, where they were shilling the Ford F-150. Hilarious because, in the middle of a chase sequence, when Sydney was at her breathlessest, she was like, "Get into the splendiferous power-charged Ford F-150!"
And reality was like, "You mean the TRUCK?"
And Vaughn said, "Move over on those awesome leather seats. We have lots of room in the cab of this splendiferous Ford F-150."
And reality was like, "Go ahead and bleed on those leather seats, bub. And in the meantime, your nemesis Sark is having sex with your wife in a parked compact car. You need the room for what now?"
How committed is SciFi to a Tuesday line-up?
With Psyche and Monk doing well on a sister network, how committed is SciFi to a Friday line-up?
There is already a HUGE amount of product placement going on on TV due to the TiVo thing. We have a friend who works in that area, and besides the clunky obvious ones, there are more subtle ones, like what is on the shelves in someone's house or posters on a character's wall or what a person is drinking. The brand is never mentioned, it's just... around. Sometimes it's not even around--they might use a logo as part of decor, so you see it but you aren't aware that you see it.
DX, you don't like BSG?
I admire BSG, but I don't enjoy watching it.
