Plus there is a fat streak of magic realism in the show, in general. Even if it weren't grandfathered in, it would still end up being vociferously argued in.

Note that Frobisher could also see the elder Fraser's posthumous appearances, so they weren't just a hallucination of Benton's.
My favorite thing about the magic snow was that none of it stuck to Fraser after that fall from an airplane in the finale. He was just standing undusted atop the snowbank when Ray K finally dug himself out of his impact crater.

Seriously. BBC4 had a due South marathon the Saturday after Christmas, and I was watching "Call of the Wild" and flailing, and at the end, Fraser's mom is Ellen from Slings & Arrows. Boy was that disconcerting.

Hahaha. I haven't watched past S2 of dS yet, but Ellen from S&A was played by Paul Gross's wife, Martha Burns. I can't decide if that casting is slightly ooky or weirdly charming. I'm leaning toward the latter.

In other news, have ya'll seen this piece of awesomeness: [link] Fans doing a live-action fourth season of Star Trek, with absolutely stunning graphics (seriously! I was gap-jawed at how good they were!), fully re-created, life-size sets, and just general awesome all around. Of course, the acting leaves something to be desired, but then again, you have to give the fanboys credit.
