~ma to Kristin and friend.

We all have to put in long days--how often do we get short days that don't involve docking some time pool or another?

Hardly ever. I have a BlackBerry, cell phone, VM, and a laptop computer. One, and more often than not 2, of those things is with me at all times. I am NEVER out of touch, with the boss, cow-orkers, or clients. Yet I get dinged if I'm not in the office. God forbid I work from home for what could be considered a superficial reason. @@ Do I ever get extra credit for working later than I should? Nope.

ION, I laughed at this bit from Salon's "I Like To Watch" column:

In fact, when it comes to other people's lifestyles, most of us are accepting as long as one or more of the following are in the mix: a) food, b) fame, c) hot people, d) extreme wealth, e) charity or f) an infant. This is why Brangelina can do no wrong: They look good, they're loaded, and they've always got a baby tucked under one arm while they write a personal check to the starving peoples of the world with the other one. The only way they could increase their popularity is by toting a big Gucci bag filled with Spaghetti Bolognese around with them.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

My boss asked me if my concussion/migraine problems would prevent me from doing what work needed to be done. Part of me understands that I don't even need to tell her what's wrong, but I can't not, at least a little. Just in case.

I responded to her by pointing out that I worked the day I was in the ER. I had my blackberry on the gurney with me, and was answering and sending e-mails. It was weeks if not months after the concussion before I took a sick day (instead of emailing in working from home).

Yeah, I'm an idiot.

I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I miss them all tonight…

Um, wow. I think I just found slash that's even wronger than Plei's Kissinger slash: Goofus/Gallant.

I work 60+ hours a week, but the 20+ bit is stuff I like doing: bartending & theater.

I'm beginning to think it might.

DC's a strange town. Face time is what it's all about.

Yeah, I'm an idiot.

No, just dedicated to ensuring that your job gets done. That's still important to you.

The artist formerly associated with cupcakes.

Also, I'm salaried. I don't have to work 40 hours to get my job done--that should be the average. We all have to put in long days--how often do we get short days that don't involve docking some time pool or another?

Bingo. You would think that since I work for the Giant Software Company, I would be able to work from home frequently. While no one has come right out and said "We prefer to have you in the office", it's understood that if you're a good employee, you only work from home in an emergency.

OK, off to class! I hope I don't cry when I see the syllabus.

My job getting done shouldn't be more important than my physical or mental health, and I have put it ahead of both many times, just with this last head stuff. My motivation is too tinged with something, well, something like fear to be called dedication.

I do work 40+ hours a week, because the second job of teaching krav takes 6 more hours in just the doing of it, and variably many more in the honing. That is love too, and I have also often placed it higher than my physical health, partially because of how valuable it is to my mental stability.

Uh, if stable is what you call what I am right now. Non-homicidal might be a better way to put it.

Nora, I hope you don't cry too.
