Early this morning, my parents headed back to Alabama after a short visit. They called at 1:30 this afternoon to say that their van was on fire on the Atchafalaya bridge west of Baton Rouge. They had smelled smoke and barely gotten out with my brother (who's retarded and cannot walk, so they'd luckily grabbed his wheelchair and my mom's purse, too) when the whole thing burst into flames, destroying the van, their luggage, and a couple of thousands of dollars' worth of office equipment they'd stopped in Houston to buy. My brother started having seizures on the bridge, and they ended up taking an ambulance into Baton Rouge where he was treated and released fairly quickly. Their insurance company told them that it would cover the ambulance, the tow truck, and a rental, but not the van or the contents.
Anyway, that was a crazy close call, but now that it's been a few hours, I'm thinking the main outcome here is that there's going to be a sharp upswing in their demands that we move someplace closer.
Whoa.
Whoa.
That's incredible. I'm so glad everyone came out of it okay in the end, and especially that your brother wasn't held in the hospital too long.
Fucking A, Corwood. Glad everyone got out alright, but I'm sorry the insurance company put their asshat on so quickly.
Thanks! Yeah, I kept reminding my mom that everyone's ok and that's all that's important. She was naturally a little shaken.
Holy cow, Corwood. And argh! at the bastard insurance company.
I'm sorry the insurance company put their asshat on so quickly.
No kidding! Nothing makes you feel better while you watch your car in flames on the side of one of the longest bridges in North America than hearing your insurance guy say, "oh, that's not covered." My pa-in-law is an insurance agent for that same company, so I'm going to get him on the phone tomorrow to see if he can help them navigate the bureaucracy.
Damn, Corwood! What the hell? Anyway, I'm glad your family is okay. That's crazy.
Yikes, Corwood! I am so glad everyone is safe now. I hope your FiL can help with the insurance navigation as well. So, so glad everyone is okay...
What they all said, Corwood. I'm glad everyone is okay.
