I'm terrifically busy with my ennui.

That sounds like a lot of fun, Dana.

There are going to be lasers. And smoke machines. I expect many long-suffering looks from the orchestra.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

Proof that the system works: Woman Accused of Witchcraft in 1706 Cleared

July 10,2006 | VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia -- It took 300 years, but Virginia's only convicted witch has finally been pardoned.

State Gov. Timothy M. Kaine was asked to exonerate Grace Sherwood, who was tried by water and accused of using her powers to cause a woman to miscarry. On Monday, the 300th anniversary of Sherwood's "ducking" trial, Kaine obliged.

"I am pleased to officially restore the good name of Grace Sherwood," Kaine said in a letter that was read aloud by Virginia Beach Mayor Meyera Oberndorf before a local re-enactment of the ducking.

"With 300 years of hindsight, we all certainly can agree that trial by water is an injustice," Kaine wrote.

On July 10, 1706, Sherwood's thumbs were tied to her toes and she was dropped into a river. She floated, proof that she was guilty because the pure water cast out her evil spirit, according to the belief system of the time.

Ever done that - read a writer, loved them, then read one too many things by them and went "meh"?

Oh yes. There are a few writers I think I've just overdosed on, at least temporarily. And there are some where I still enjoy their older work but there's a cutoff point I don't go beyond. I pretty much stick to Sheckley's stuff from the 60s and 70s for that reason.

Wait, is this real-world child support, where the money goes to buy food for the kids, or MRA fantasyland child support where the women just buy Ferraris and cocaine? -Jessica

Damnit. Cute boy is very happily in a relationship, but insists on meeting up for dinner, even though not wanting it to be a date.

How come?

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

Because you're awesome. And maybe he has a cute friend.

I have successfully de-crankified myself, finally. I came home from work and did NOT sit down on my ass -- I put my new bed stuff in the laundry! All new fresh and clean stuff to sleep on tonight! Plus, guacamole as (part of) dinner.

Why did Darth Vader cross the road? To get to the Dark Side!

How come?

Um, because even though he is in a relationship, he finds you attractive and so he wants to spend more time with you. But since he's in a relationship, he has to make sure you know it's not a date, so he can tell himself he's a good boyfriend, he's not going on a date with you, after all, he's just meeting a friend for dinner. He could even tell his girlfriend if he wanted to, that he's meeting a friend for dinner, because see it's not a date. And hell, he can even flirt a bit, since you know already that it's not a date. And that way, he can drive both you and the girlfriend just a bit crazy, all the while telling himself that he's not the kind of guy who'd ever go out on his girlfriend.

Or, you know, I am totally wrongheaded and still perhaps a wee bit bitter about the whole boyfriend-not-dating-my-friend-until-he-left-me-for-her thing.

Now tagless for your comfort.

How much do you usually tip a hair stylist?

I tend to tip around 15%--but I also tip the shampooer a few bucks if some poor, lowly person who's just waiting to get a chair of her own as a stylist washes. And if I love the cut, I'll tip 20%

I'm within the norm, it seems.
