Geez Louise- the worst thing my health teacher ever did was tell REALLY personal stories about herself and her kids.
A friend who was a year younger than I was ended up having a health teacher who was male and just out of college. He was from the town, and had been a senior when I was in school, but everyone he "knew" had graduated. I remember laughing and laughing with my friend, because he was always at all the keggers and road parties and it was sort of ridiculous that he was trying to teach her "health". Although, to be fair, most people took health as a freshman, and so the other students in her class weren't at the same parties.
Sparky, I will admit I actively tried to get her fired. I even bugged the administrators about it, etc. I did that because she basically said, child abuse is the child's fault. (because men biologically have to have willing or forced sex when they are aroused).
I never understood how my classmates could like her after that.
Is bon bon around?
From a while ago, but I'm back from court. Drunk though. (We won.)
This has been making the rounds today: [link]

(Completely tangentially, theremin was one of the preliminary championship round words in the spelling bee today. She missed it; she put an "a" in the middle of it. It was all very exciting. Can't wait for the finals tonight.)
Wow. Just...wow. God, sometimes I feel bad cause I talk to my kids about sex-ed cause the Health teacher is sue-leery, and I am not formally a Health professional, but...damn, I am aware of my own biases (towards choice, towards contraception, towards tolerance and educations) but now.
God DAMN, people are dumb.
I know the people you are talking about Cindy. In fact, once or twice I've tried to point out that equating Dominionism with Christianity is dangerous, becaause it gives the dominionist more power.
There are Dominionists out there, and they scare me, too
Honestly, I wish I heard this from more Christians.
I had some really great teachers at that school. I think what happened is they had a teacher leave right before winter break and then had to scramble to find a replacement and they made a bad choice. The school nurse was fantastic, I could go to her when I had panic attacks. Her husband taught history and he was a great teacher.
Honestly, I wish I heard this from more Christians.
I wasn't familiar with this term, but, having read the entry in Wikipedia, I'm both thankful that we have the term and seriously concerned about the people and trends it describes.
It actually saddens me more than scares me, though.
Working in a library I have a lot of the same problems _ I know which way I lean - and I have to be careful about how I let it show. One of our regular patron, that I only know because he notices when I get my haircut, had to talk to me the other day. He brought me over to a section of books - in the sociology sec , and showed me what had been shocked to find. Books on the gay lifestyle in sf, or being gay in america, etc, etc, etc. He said he would have never seen them in his highschool library. So I had to carefully explain that we had a much broader clientel than a high school library and that we were a popular materials library, meaning that we bought thing according to the interest of the people in the town. ( biteing my tounge the whole time)
a week later he put in a request for materials reconsideration - for the whole section.
Where the fuck are my thunderstorms?
Why is life so cruel that my office is so cold my hands are blocks of ice and my apartment is probably the temperature of the surface of the sun?
Why doesn't that stupid search utility work like I expected?
Why aren't people actually responding to my requests for help?
Why, when they do, are they answering COMPLETELY DIFFERENT questions than I have posed?
Why can't I decide where to stop and grab something for dinner since I'm betting my apartment is the temperature of the surface of the sun and no way in hell am I cooking?
WHY WHY WHY?!
edit: er, I guess there is a WHERE in there too.
