[NAFDA] "There will be an occasional happy, so that it might be crushed under the boot of the writer." From Zorro to Angel (including Wonderfalls, The Inside and Drive), this is where Buffistas come to anoint themselves in the bloodbath.
4. The obvious one - the marketing. It's little harder to market something which has a narrower target audience than, say, a comedy.

Ohh. Tag?
My cheerleading/support dollars are restricted by my suckass job.
I feel your pain. I still haven't bought the Tim DVD because I'm so annoyed that the Joss one is cheaper. I will, but I have to get over my annoyance. Isn't Stargate one of the longest-running shows on the tube?
It is the longest-running sci-fi series on AMERICAN television.
Ultimately, Stargate is a niche show. It has a niche network, which is happy to support it.
Sci-fi on networks like FOX and ABC is always going to struggle, as it would need to break out of the niche appeal to survive. You've got to be very lucky, and have a really solid show.
