Little did they know, Mom was a former race car driver.
That's awesome.
I took driver's ed on an automatic (so I could pass the test!) but my parents had standards, so that's what I really learned to drive on. I don't drive at all now.

she didn't know how to fill the gas tank
This happened to me and my sister in a rental car once. We were all excited 'cause Mom said she was gonna rent us a "Sports Car" to drive home from Iowa and when MK got back to the apartment and I asked, "What'd we get?!!" She replied, "I got a bitchin' Fiero." In a very-not-pleased-about-it tone. The thing didn't come with an owners manual! We were at the gas station for a half an hour before someone pulled in who knew where the fuel door button was. Anybody want to guess?
I guess driver's side, near the door and floor. Is it a car from the late seventies/early eighties? There were some design elements given the gas crisis that made it harder to steal gas.
I think it was probably an '84
ETA: It was on the driver's side but not near the floor.
Mom raced in rallies, I don't know what kind of car they drove. That's the kind where you're competing with other teams on a kind of scavenger hunt. She drove and her best friend Mac navigated. He was a cool English dude. I had a crush on him.
Here in New Jersey, it's illegal to pump your own gas. When I first moved here from the South, I couldn't believe there were grown people who didn't know how to pump gas.
It's not that difficult, though. I mean...you squeeze the handle. The end.
Seriously. A friend of mine joined me for a visit down South and I watched her try to pump gas. She didn't even know to squeeze the handle. I guess if you've never even watched someone do it, it could be baffling.

Kat, add "of TV's hit Drive" and you may have something there.
Whoa. I just Googled Mom's friend, for no reason because I know he's dead, and found he was apparently a designer of rally equipment. Mac Cornforth. That's very cool.
