I have started The Name of the Rose more times than I care to confess, and never finished it. Perhaps I'll do better now? And the same goes for Foucault's Pendulum. And I'm quite certain that they're both splendid books, but...yeah. After a little while I find myself wanting things to go vroom and the words to be shorter. I can't account for it - I'm perfectly capable of reading grown up books and savouring them, but I seem to have a mental block when it comes to his stuff.

I'm glad it's not just me! I have a feeling I may like Foucault's Pendulum more, if I can just get through this damn book. I mean, I like the neato detective logic, but I can't get through all the papal politics. And I don't know Latin, so there goes about half the book. I was inspired to finally tackle them after their names kept coming up in my Da Vinci Code discussion. But right now I actually long for the florid excitement of Dan Brown, which is just not right. Also, I don't really know what "florid" means, but it seems like the word to use.

I had a very difficult time getting through Focault's Pendulum myself, as Eco (being a professor of semiotics and linguistics) likes to write in multiple languages (none of which I spoke) and NOT translate. He's also got a dense, crunchy brain, and writes dense, crunchy novels, so it was tough going, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I have yet to tackle Name of the Rose, and am a little intimidated that he writes big streches of it in Latin. Still, I'll have to tackle that some day.

Are there big stretches ahead of me? Crap! So far, it's just random psalm quotations on every other page. But big stretches are easy to skip, right? He can't actually expect me to translate it all myself in order to follow the story!

Actually, I was responding to your description. I missed an "apparently" in there. You've read more of the book than I have.

I quite enjoyed Name of the Rose. It's a fine detective story that, as an added bonus, also teaches about philosophy and the medieval Church. But first and foremost a detective story.

Worked for me. Though I haven't tried any of Eco's other work.

Cindy, a punch in the nose would be over too quickly. I'd stick with your plan of making him the butt of a family joke for the rest of your life. I'm very glad that whatever it was, it doesn't seem to be causing him pain/harm.

I re-read Name of the Rose regularly. It's the library thing that makes it so cool (to me).
