I'm worried about my mother. I should be asleep, but mind is working. My family has funny joints. When we don't have a belly we can put our feet behind the neck, the fingers bend in odd ways, etc.

A couple of months ago Mom was annoyed because she couldn't start her car because her thumb would bend backwards and she couldn't turn the key. She rarely drives, but she had to wait until my step-father came home to run her short errand because she couldn't manage to get the key turned.

Yesterday when I saw her she had her thumb taped to keep it straight because otherwise it would flop backward and it would hurt like hell to set it back again. I don't think she can write anymore. She is a writer so this is a big deal. (one I can maybe solve because I have dandy voice recognition software that maybe I can talk her into using)

Everyone else in my family takes some variety of joint meds or supplements. They all have a warning about shellfish allergies. Mom is very much allergic to shellfish so she can't take these.

Sorry about the brain dump. I'll do a bunch of research this week and see what I can come up with for her. She is 85 and generally lives a very active life, but the not being able to use her hands thing is very tough on her. She's also the type that would never let us know she had a problem until it is at the point where she can no longer hide it.

I know punctuation will follow, and really I appreciate it. But mostly, I really appreciate having someone to share my sorrow about this with. DH is a typical fix it type that doesn't know quite what to do when a fix isn't within his power. We'll figure something out; I just hope she hasn't hid the problem so long it isn't fixable at all.

I can't even imagine how frustrating (actually, way beyond frustrating) that must be for her, Laura. I hope you find every bit of helpful information there is out there.

Is there some kind of brace she can use that would give her use of the finger without too much pain or inconvenience? Ouch.

Yeah, my dad takes those. They're basically ground up crab shell, so take that warning seriously.
