I got a new sump pump (mine failed - thus the basement problem) and while it is working diligently, apparently there is no way of knowing when the damn thing will fail again. I will probably replace it as a matter of course later this year (they only have 1 year warranties) but if the electricity goes out for a long period of time, I will still be screwed. So I am investigating a power backup for it.

Some w/d vacs can be set up to expel the water through a garden hose. At this point even if yours can, probably of little comfort, but you might check.
Unfortunately, the only ones that Sears had were the non-hoseable kind. Since I felt pretty lucky to even get one of those, I'm only going to spend a little of my tiny amount of energy on bitterness.
My roommate has come home, and now she is going to help me bail. Oh yes, she will....
