NBC News ran a segment on that story last night. They said they contacted Airbus, who said that the "leaning-seat" idea was raised and rejected.
Which isn't to defend the increase from 8 seats across to 9 seats across.

So she was citing instances in which we already accepted something 'derivative' as worthy in its own right.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.
And the root of all that discussion was some really bright chick who's selling her Star Trek fanfic on Amazon. Printed and bound. So I have to disagree with Mr. Ellis--getting paid for it doesn't make it not fanfic. What she's doing is still fanfic, as well as moronic.
