Here's a question. When I'm filling out a job application, and it asks if it may contact an employer I worked for eight years ago, what do I say? I mean, I guess they can, but I don't know that that employer would really remember me. Are they really likely to try to call the guy who used to be manager of the Boston office but is now Senior VP in charge of the northeast to ask him about an editor who worked for him for two years and left in 1998?

Emily, definitely say they can contact the old employer -- they probably won't, but if you say they can't it looks bad. Make up a salary, and leave off the temp stuff.
