I KNOW! Adjuncts are supposed to be all desperate and crazy and will take anything for a buck and a quarter. Except not so much in Grad Ed. Happens to me every. single. semester. If they don't work here, they can get a gig at another university, teach summer school, work as a new teacher mentor, etc. There are so few good, non-crazy ones.

I think this is how my mother occasionally ends up teaching a class she didn't mean to -- they need her to fill in a hole, but aren't necessarily clear about what the specific hole actually is.

David, what I like to do in Vegas is gamble, with the occasional break to look at the Bellagio fountain, ride the New York New York rollercoaster, etc. Going to a spa is also lovely -- if your hotel doesn't have one you can use, I think it costs like $20 to get access to the saunas and stuff. But I guess they aren't co-ed, so probably not the best thing to do on a couple's trip. So never mind.

I have daytime running lights. I don't think they can be turned off.

Perkins, my adventure in the suburbs was pleasantly un-adventuresome. Adventureful? Whatever. Took the commuter train, got picked up at the station (in an SUV!), and got a ride all the way home. Awesome. I have to say, I was shocked at how expensive the train was -- $14 one way. I guess that's cheaper than parking in the city, but still! Yet another reason not to live in the burbs.

That is a lot. Both Caltrain and Bart only run about 4 bucks each way.

Hec, the Star Trek exhibit at the Hilton is also fun.

Ooooh, Vegas. Stand outside the Bellagio and watch the water/light show just like in Ocean's Eleven. Play slots at the Flamingo Hilton to get a taste of old, cheesy, pre-Disney-fied Vegas. Do the Fremont Street experience downtown. Personally, I love Circus Circus, though I know it's not everyone's cup of tea. It reminds me of old Las Vegas before they filled the town up with fake Paris and Venice, crappy Excaliburs and New York New Yorks. Yeah, Circus Circus is the shit and they had amusement park rides long before MGM Grand was even born!

Things are looking up in the academic job market as the boomers start to retire. In traditionally job-poor fields like History and English it once was the style for graduate students to paper their walls with the hundreds of rejection letters that they had received from job applications. Now the best students at some programs are getting several offers from good schools. It's still pretty hard to get a job in the humanities, but at least there are some jobs now.
