Things not to do in LV: get caught up in a L&O marathon.
The guy used netherworld in the article. That's where I stopped reading.
I had to go back after seeing this. [link] Now that article cracks me up, *especially* the photo of the rescuer, which reminds me of Dorothea Lange (although I'm really just misremembering Migrant Mother).
Paras like this seem a subtle sendup of rescue stories (like the Floyd Collins rescue):
...reporters, photographers and television and radio crews recorded the scene and hung on every word from rescuers, who emerged now and then from steel trap doors in the sidewalk to report no progress. With little news, some reporters solicited the views of dog walkers and others who paused to watch the activity...
Yeah, Jesse. Unfortunately, I can't make our full-time faculty take on any more course sections because they are all tapped out. NYSED has very specific regulations on how many semester hours full-time faculty can teach because this is an alternative route certification program for teachers. Tons of regulations.
David, everything Perkins said is good. I rubbed the Angel Toes at Hoover Dam (supposed to bring good fortune) and Joe and I won a good amount of money at the craps table.
The new pirate show at Treasure Island isn't so much with the pirates as it is with the hot, half naked chicks singing and gyrating on an em-bossomed pirate ship. THen, they get all wet.

That cat looks so pitiful. More sympathy due to the whole look of utter betrayal and hopelessness, rather than the normal cat reaction of trying to shred his owner.
Hec--we LOVED the Liberace Museum [link]
and I think you guys will, too.
we ran into your friend the wine guy
Awesome! I felt bad missing Spidra's thing, but I'm not good about going out on weeknights. I crashed out relatively early and I'm taking today off! Yay! I'm going to walk the dog, and file, and sort clothes for charity, and all sorts of other useful things.
How was Spidra's show?
YAY SHRIFT on your last day! I'm so pleased!
Hmmmmm. I hope this sort of thing doesn't happen nationally this fall.
If Bush's approval numbers carry over to the congressional candidates, the housecleaning should be like unto the French Revolution. According to CBS News 1/3 of voters polled think of the upcoming elections as a chance to vote against Bush. [link]
Things are looking up in the academic job market as the boomers start to retire.
There is indeed this phenomenon, but also, if what I've read is to be believed, a continuation of the trend to hire more part time, non tenure track and adjuncts to replace outgoing tenured professors... in order to keep costs down and have greater adminstrative control...so perhaps that would 'splain kat's problems with pinning down adjuncts. They are all in demand now!
They are all in demand now!
They are. It is a total seller's market. We hire a lot of current practitioners to teach in our program and they get offers not only from other universities running alt. cert. programs but also from the school districts. Districts are doing so much more PD than they did in the past. And this PD requires experienced teachers with graduate degrees. And usually pays more, with money that feeds into your retirement fund because you are still working for the district, and so on and so on.

I'm gonna hug and cuddle this idea like a teddybear.
