Book and tattoo geekery! The next tattoo I'm getting is the memorial tattoo for my Mom. But I figured out the tattoo that comes *after* that one. I'm re-reading The Historian (I'm planning on doing a Nocturnal House post about it), and hit the section where they discover a family that is distantly descended from Vlad the Impaler, and that it is a family tradition to tattoo one child in each generation with a small image of the Tzepesh Dracul dragon, for protection.
You people see where I'm going with this, right? Because, hey, I really am a descendant (by way of a poor serving maid, but still!), and I'm a Dracula geek. Now I just have to decide where I'll have it done. I'm idly thinking of the front of my right shoulder.

I really like The Historian. It's a very good mix of historical research and vampires. There are parts of it that creep me out every time I read it. Plus, I know a lot of the books the author used for her references, so I can play spot-the-bibliography.
But! If you don't like books where the historical research is almost its own character, you might want to give it a pass.

le nubian, I adored The Historian, and it's definitely not my usual type of book. The text was pretty dense, and to be honest, it took me a month to read it, but I loved the story.

Cass, it is safe for you to read. Not violent, but scary creepy. I'll loan you my paperback the next time I see you. Because yeah, you would LOVE it. Historical research AND vampires!

It is a really dense read. And every time I read it, it makes me want to go on a non-fiction vampire binge. (Which I am going to do this time.)

It made me want to do a tour of Eastern Europe, and I'd never been interested in that region before. She really made the political history come alive.
