Literary Buffistas 3: Don't Parse the Blurb, Dear.

There's more to life than watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer! No. Really, there is! Honestly! Here's a place for Buffistas to come and discuss what it is they're reading, their favorite authors and poets. "Geez. Crack a book sometime."

It made me want to do a tour of Eastern Europe, and I'd never been interested in that region before.

I really, really want to go to Slovenia and Transylvania. Mostly for family history reasons, but also because I am that kind of vampire geek and want to go visit Those Sorts of places.

A dress should be tight enough to show you're a woman but loose enough to flee from zombies. — Ginger

I liked The Historian; I didn't LOVE it, because it seemed to lack a little action that I like, and the ending seemed to lack a little something I needed. It felt like sequel bat, and there's not going to be a sequel.

I understand the notion of an open ending perfectly well; it felt like she was just tired, and struggling for a way to end it. YMMV.

Huh. I was needing something to re-read tonight; maybe I'll revisit it.

But I do love the actual academic angle of it, and it was a good story.

I tried to read Kostova's next book: snoozefest, IMO.

Do y'all think if a person took a lot of iron supplements, it would make their blood toxic to sidhe?

Bob's learned to live with tragedy, but he knows that this tragedy is one that won't ever leave him or get better.

Cass, it is safe for you to read. Not violent, but scary creepy. I'll loan you my paperback the next time I see you. Because yeah, you would LOVE it. Historical research AND vampires!

That sounds fantastic. Thank you.

I am a woman of various inclinations and only some of the time are they to burn everything down in frustration

Not before it was toxic to them. Too much iron in your blood is bad news and most people's bodies will not let it build up.

Tries to remember where I keep my To Be Read List to make sure The Historian is on it...

That's what I was thinking. You could probably make iron water, by soaking nails and such, perhaps?

Hmmm.

"It didn't taste good. It tasted soooo horrible. It tasted like....a vodka martini." - Matilda

The mythology around iron varies wildly, so you have considerable room for making shit up.

"What kind of magical sunshine and lollipop world do you live in? Because you need to be medicated."-SFist

Hmm, how creepy? Violent, scary creepy or just really disturbing? Basically can I read it?

Well, I wouldn't recommend reading it when you are about to discover a bat in your basement, but I'd say it's more creepy than really disturbing.

It goes off the rails in the last part, but up until then I really enjoyed it.

Bwahahahahaha! Oh, nice.

(Of course, if I discovered a bat in our basement, I would be busy trying to catch it to keep as a pet, much to Pete's dismay.)

Why did Darth Vader cross the road? To get to the Dark Side!

Oo, I need to read The Historian. How come I haven't heard of it before? I clearly need to spend more time in this thread so I can get more leisure reading suggestions.

Bought a book for Franny on Friday after the librarian at Isaac's school said it's making its way through the 4th and 5th grades, both boys and girls: Rapunzel's Revenge. Franny's almost half way through it already.
