Okay, I need to have a teeny rant, and it is not worth actually having somewhere where it would lead to a conversation with people I don't know. So I'ma just gonna rant a touch here, get it out of my system, head off temptation at the pass.

Dear person (no, not you, but one of the people who replied): The fuck? Fandoms have different ways in which they use common fannish vocabulary. If you want to say "that is a stupid way to use that term," fine. If you want to use the term in whatever way you prefer, and are willing to accept the fact that you will thus end up confusing some people, fine. No, really, that's not a pissy fine, that's a "sure, whatever, be happy with your fannish life" fine. But please not to be saying, in a dismissive and snotty manner, that the fandom in question is going to have to learn your usage. 'Cause you know what? We don't. Screw you, and don't try to tell me what to do.

Why am I feeling so possessive? Why do I care about this? Why does anybody care about this? How could anyone get seriously upset and pissy about ways in which different fandoms use the term "ship"? I mean, come on!

SG has the weirdest pairing and genre classification system. 'Ship means het, but not just any het. Like, Jack/OFC would be het, but not ship, like Jack/Sam. I have no earthly idea if they call Janet/Daniel het or ship. And 'ship' cannot be used for slash pairing under any circumstances. Plus, there's 'smarm' (or is it 'swarm'?) which is subclassification of slash, I think, and I *still* don't know exactly what it means. Or maybe it's a subclassification of hurt/comfort. Oy, my head.

Actually, it's me complaining about someone else complaining about the crazy SG folks. And you know, if it was just "this is a deeply silly classification, and is not the way I use the words" that'd be fine, but the fandom isn't actually required to change for you personally, sweetie. (Er, not you you, obviously.)

I'm just having one of those moments where I'm looking at things that people get genuinely het up and angry about and shaking my head in despair. And then getting het up about it, in an eminently mockable fashion. Oh well. At least I'm self-aware, right?

In SG fandom usage, "ship" pretty much means "J/S." My personal head mostly reserves the term for close-to-canon stuff--or at least for pairings that people would like to actually see happen on the show, and to which people are really committed. Well, to the extent that my personal head uses it at all, which isn't very much. I'm still kinda gen at heart, really.

When people say "shippers" they mean J/S. (So really it's a pretty old-school, X-Files-derived usage of the term. Not our fault that other fandoms changed it around.) If they're talking about another pairing, they'll say "Daniel/Janet shippers" or whatever. No one that I've heard of uses it for the slash pairings.

So, if Jack and Sam cuddle without having sex, it's not smarm but UST, right? Or maybe UST is an XF-specific terminology. Ehhh, Buffyverse was a lot less complicated, because people shipped everyone with anyone in Buffyverse (It's a het! It's a slash! It's a threesome! It's a big damn orgy!) and just marked the story by the character paring, like B/S, A/S/Dru, Whistler/Cordy, etc.
