Even people who agree on the issues with a guy won't let him get away with a gigantic land-grab. Not when it's their land he is grabbing.
They'll gang up on him and suddenly the Department of Health and Human Services will be a function of the federal court system.
Yeah, see, I
want
to believe that. I'm just not sure I do anymore. There've been how many moments in this administration where you thought "my god, they've finally gone and crossed that line and even their supporters will have to acknowledge how out of control they are"? I'm no longer certain that day will come, no matter what they do.
I really am still shocked that they are trying to use war powers or whatever in the war on terror. It's NOT A REAL WAR.
Rove would say Jesse has a pre-9/11 mindset.
Senator Feingold would say Rove has a pre-1776 mindset.
Never underestimate the self-interest of the powerful. I don't think it has anything to do with "OMG you've gone too far!!" -- I think it's all about turf, and turf is a really powerful thing in DC.

You can't overestimate the importance of turf in government activities. It's impossible.

I'm crazy that way. I still think the president should follow the law, and if they want to be able to say "We HAVE to! It's a WAR!" then it should be a congressionally-declared war, like that one document says. What was that document again? Oh yeah -- the CONSTITUTION.
Christ.
There are definitely some Republicans who think the administration has gone too far in claiming powers and I imagine Cheney is busy twisting arms these days with threats of withdrawing campaign support.
Having finally gotten in to the site (hellooooooo Slashdot!), I find zillow's price for my house really very funny.

Well, I hope I'm proved wrong. But right now - I don't have that faith anymore. And when you can't even believe in craven self-interest, what the hell can you believe?
