I think Doctors say "Avoid alcohol while taking X" just as a way of getting people to cut down on their general alcohol intake
I also think that they're not doing this to benefit your health, but to make sure there's enough alcohol left for them.

My diabetes meds say avoid alcohol. But alcohol can do odd things to blood sugar - as in drive it way low - and shats what the meds are supposed to do as well. so the combination could be bad. really bad. But I still don't avoid it - just much more careful
He might have been concerned that you would drink to alleviate the pain.
