So, is the pickup line what finally gets one to agree to go to bed, or is it what starts the are-we-gonna-go-to-bed banter?

Spike's Bitches 28: For the Safety of Puppies...and Christmas!
[NAFDA] Spike-centric discussion. Lusty, lewd (only occasionally crude), risque (and frisque), bawdy (Oh, lawdy!), flirty ('cuz we're purty), raunchy talk inside. Caveat lector.
Jess! Hey, baby....post in this thread often?....
What's a nice girl like you doing in a thread like this?

Waiting for a bad girl like you, natch!

The latter. It's what you say to Random Person In Bar to start the conversation.

HAR. I just called my friend who has a birthday today and we're chatting and then all of a sudden, she's all, "Nora, I have to tell you something.".. OK... Then she says, "I'm watching Buffy. And I love it." She's at the beginning of Season 2 and I'm squeeing for her, that there's so much good stuff ahead. Another funny things she said: "I'm a little concerned; I've gotten attached to Angel, but I see he gets his own show! What's the deal?" I told her that I couldn't tell her the deal but it's all going to be OK.
Her husband is a crazy organizer guy who calls all her friends on her birthday to remind them to call her. Or maybe it's just me? I do appreciate the reminder especially since I forgot another friend's birthday recently. But, it's funny, sweet, and slightly weirdly controlling that he does that.

But then, the pickup line does make it clear that's what the utterer is after, right?
You know, I take that back, because clearly you wouldn't walk up to someone and say "Hey baby, I'm a lesbian in a man's body."
So I guess the pickup line is the thing you say to start the "Let's go have sex" conversation, whether you've already been talking or not. In theory, it makes the pickupee think "Hey, that person's funny/cute! I should have sex with them!"

Yup.
sj, you have to take care of yourself, since your bosses clearly don't have any of your interests at heart. Not that they have to...but no need to be pricks about it.
Thank you, ita. This really helps.
I don't think anyone has ever used a pick up line on me.
