I'm guessing Jacob, somewhere in time, learns two will enter the room to kill him, hence the always "only the one he calls can enter". I'm guessing he knows that's Ben, which is why he never gave audience to Ben.
Ooh, I like that theory.
Does the field show who is in opposition, and word show who is in control?
Interesting. Like a chess board.
Clearly MIB takes the spirit of Locke.
I'm thinking he's been every dead person we've ever seen post-death. Blatant thievery from Joss (First Evil), but puts a fun spin on things.

Ooo. Curious! I wonder what the signifigence is for each person he takes on? Clearly Ben's daughter and Jacks father make sense. Was MIB haunting Hugo? Or is Hugo just nuts?
Or is Hugo just nuts?
That is the unanswerable question...!
well, wasn't it Dead!Charlie who convinced Hugo to go back to the island, or was at least urging him to go back? And then Jacob gets in the cab with him and gives him the guitar. Were the Dead!Charlie visits counter to Jacob's?
Were the Dead!Charlie visits counter to Jacob's?
So maybe Hugo's been seeing Jacob and other people have been seeing MIB? Interesting. It sort of works. If you don't worry too much about which is which.
I don't think Jacob's rival is the same being who appeared before Ben as his daughter. Locke was surprised to learn that Ben was following him because his daughter told him to.
Jacob's rival shouldn't have been surprised at this if he was involved in both things.
I believe "The Black Smoke" is another entity that is separate from Jacob and his rival.

Ya, the black smoke thing confuses me. Sure, the polar bears were explained. Butt never the smoke. Even Ben was like 'eh, we don't know entirely'. Is the black smoke the MIB dude?
Locke was surprised to learn that Ben was following him because his daughter told him to.
That is a good point. If it was a MIB game, he would know all the players.
Huh. I just realized that the Locke who told Richard to tell Locke that he would have to die was not, in fact , the Locke who died. Nifty.
!!!! Wow, whole new levels of wierd. I think i read of some bliggedy blog that some call the dude in dark "esau" as a foil to jacob. Mebbe i spell that wrong. You know, the cursed brother.
