The only reason I can deal with my open plan office is that I've got a corner cube with two empty cubes on either side. So I've got space, if not exactly privacy.

I am SO envious.

There is no wall between me and the person on the other side of my monitor. There is a wall that extends 8" past the end of my desk that separates me from the problem-child writer who is seated next to me. I just keep silently repeating "Only two more months on this contract. Only two more months."

Oh thank the Gods. I sent the following email to my previous employer re: letter of recommendation:

What a shame that companies are forced to implement such restrictive policies due to our increasingly litigious environment. While I understand the rationale, the work that I did at Company X is such a nice complement to the Masters for which I'm applying. I wonder if there might be a difference if the letter is for an academic (rather than employment) recommendation. Would you mind if I contacted someone in HR to find out the specifics of the policy? I don't want to burden you with having to do any research on my behalf.

Having been out of school for almost 10 years, the workplace recommendations are an important part of my application. I'd love to be able to include one from you since you were such a mentor for me and I learned so much during my time there. Anything you might be able to do would be truly appreciated.
